Built on the rocky travertine outcrop, it sits high up over the landscape and it is possible to see across to Follonica and the coast. 30 minutes from Castiglione della Pescaia, it is easily accessible by car. After the initial domination of the Republic of Pisa, Massa Marittima became an independent town in the 13th century. In the 14th century it was conquered by Siena until it became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in the mid-16th century. The streets exhibit a historic pattern and layout with steep stone steps and ways through the town, with historic buildings all contained within a City wall, which is bisected in various places by gates. A highlight of Massa Marittima is the central large church, Saint Cerbonius Cathedral, built in the 13th century. Another key attraction is the Fonti dell'Abbondanza the end point of a water supply project. This palazzo that contains the Fonti features a unique fresco of a phallus tree, called The Fertility Tree after it was discovered in 2000. For more information visit the site from the city.
